Reel demo glossary: symbols, matches and probability

A short reference to the terms used in our original reel illustration, with examples and limits.

Reel, symbol and spin

A reel is one of the three symbol positions shown by our illustration. A symbol is one of its five possible pictures: lemon, cherry, grape, star or bell. A spin makes one selection for each position. These definitions describe this site’s simple model; commercial games may arrange positions and rules differently.

Combination and triple match

A combination is the ordered result across the three positions. Lemon–cherry–bell and bell–cherry–lemon are different combinations. A triple match has the same symbol in all three positions. Our model has 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 equally likely combinations; five are triple matches. A visual match has no prize value here.

Probability and observed frequency

Probability comes from the defined model: 5 divided by 125 gives 4%. Observed frequency comes from a particular record: divide its triple matches by its number of spins. For example, two matches in 20 spins gives 10% observed frequency. That record does not change the model’s 4% chance for the next spin. With zero spins, observed frequency is undefined.

Independence and expected count

Independence means earlier results do not change the probabilities of the next selections. Expected count multiplies the number of spins by the 4% match probability. It can be fractional because it describes an average across repeated groups. For ten spins the expected count is 0.4, even though an actual group must contain a whole number of matches.

Why match probability is not RTP

A triple-match percentage counts matching combinations. RTP is a return ratio involving turnover and returned amounts. Our illustration has neither stakes nor payouts, so it has no RTP. Keep the two ideas separate when moving between the glossary, the probability tool and the ratio calculator.
